The black bar, if it's the one I am looking at of which you speak, is likely signs of hydraulics and weathering where the stone is morphing into maghemite??? I often see this when cutting the Franconia associated with finite cracks not easily seen. However, I am not sure I am looking at the same thing you are. I have scales and saws, etc., here if you get in a bind.
