[meteorite-list] 240 pound SHREWSBURY "Meteor"

Pleasant greetings fellow list-members...

In reading the posting to the "list" regarding the "SHREWSBURY HOME-COMING" I was a bit surprized to see the claim that according to scientists 90% of a METEOR is LOST during atmospheric passage, meaning the Shrewsbury meteor was 240 pounds in weight as it entered our atmosphere...

I'm not buying it... Ablation MIGHT result in a ~15% weight loss but that hypothetical 90% guess - which is all it is - sounds a wee-bit excessive to me.

Anyone else care to share their thoughts on the matter?

                                                                                                            "Zep", over & out...

Interesting that it took 5 months to unload 5 of the certificates. Guess not
many people had faith in the operation. (Of course, in this case the nay-sayers
were right).

Hi Darren
Actually all of the stocks were issued to the parent company USSR & MC
except for the first one. My guess is whenever they needed money for
the operation they issued stock equal to how much money was sent to
the crater as 4 of the 5 stocks are for different amounts. I am not an
expert in corporate finances or legalities but my guess it was done
for legal reasons. Unfortunately I could not figure out how much each
share was worth but $100 would be a good guess as this seems to be a
common amount around this era.
BTW I sold one of the stocks already #16 so only one left.

Meteorite comes back 'home'
CARL LINDQUIST
The York Dispatch (Pennsylvania)
May 4, 2007
A diamond-shaped, two-pound piece of the only meteorite ever found in
York County has returned home for the 100-year anniversary of its discovery.
Found in 1907 about 7 miles north of the Shrewsbury borough line, the
entire meteorite weighed about 24 pounds, said Bill Kreiger, a professor
of Earth Sciences and Science Education at York College.
Dubbed the "Shrewsbury Meteorite," it was cut into several pieces that
were distributed to museums and other institutions across the world.
As a boy, Kreiger learned of the meteorite's existence. For the last few
decades he has worked on-and-off to bring a piece back here and display
it, he said.
In mid-April he got a slice of it from The Academy of Natural Sciences
in Philadelphia. A showing is set for Sunday afternoon in New Freedom
between noon and 2 p.m. at the Rose Volunteer Fire Co., 200 E. Main St.
Best left: "It's the best of all the specimens," Kreiger said. "It's
very valuable."
Kreiger hopes a glimpse of something that originated from outside Earth
will take people's minds away from their day-to-day frustrations and give
them a more philosophical look at the world and its tumult.
Only eight meteorites have ever been found in Pennsylvania, Kreiger
said. The remains of so-called falling or shooting stars, most
meteorites -- about 18,000 of the more than 25,000 known examples --
have been found in Antarctica.
Kreiger said the Shrewsbury Meteorite is composed almost entirely of
nickel and iron, which indicate that it likely came from the core of a
disintegrated planet or moon, or one that didn't form completely.
While it's been here, Kreiger said, it is stored under lock and key in a
local bank.
The public will not be able to hold the meteorite, which Kreiger said
will be kept in a "case-within-a-case" for display.
Scientists generally figure that meteorite's lose about 90 percent of
their mass during entry, which means the Shrewsbury Meteorite probably
weighed about 240 pounds as a meteor, he said.

I recently purchased a 797 gram Ghubara with the intent of making one 50mm
sphere and then slicing the rest up for resell.
I received it today but unfortunately it is not thick enough to produce a
50mm sphere, so I will have to return it to the seller.
This was a big disappointment since I really like the way it looks so now I
will have to try to find another source for this material.
If you have a piece that you think will be large enough to produce a 50mm
sphere please email me directly at bobadebt _at_ ec.rr.com
If you have a piece that is too large but have no way to cut it we can work
something out, since I have a large saw and can cut specimens up to 5 inches
thick.
Thanks

Greensburg, Kansas was hit with a tornado about an hour ago. There is seven
miles of damage thrown around highway 54, around the downtown district. The
hotal/diner is gone, the water tower is gone, the Big Well where the 1,000
lb. Brenham meteorite is/was located was hit....along with all the buildings
around it. The main farming dealer lot was destroyed. Basically everything
that was anything in Greensburg was hit.
I hope our Greensburg neighbors make it through the night, and that the
meteorite is intact.
This is pretty bad, glad I don't chase them anymore.

The damage total is not known, no power in the region is making
communication hard, but the storm has finally died down. It had a rain
jacket all around it so it could not be seen well. No one can know how many
torandos it spawned.
Greensburg took the majority of the damage. Dozens and dozens of homes where
totally destroyed, about 60% of the town. The high school, the city jail,
the hotal/diner, the hostiptal, pretty much every city buidling. Everything
on the west side of main street. You can go for a few miles, in what was the
busiest section of the little town and the only thing that was left standing
in the grain tower (which is ironic I guess).
>From what I can tell on the damage it did, it appears to have landed about 2
miles east of where Steve found the big Brenham. Haviland has a Red Cross
section set up where people are being sent.
100's of rescue workers are on the scene. Injuries are unknown, at least 50
are at area hosptials, no confirmed deaths, which is good and amazing in
itself, but it is very early.
The storm lasted six hours but has died down.

Hi List,
Could someone kindly explain the significance of the '70's in reference to
the chondritic meteorite in the latest Spider-man movie? (The only thing I
can imagine re: the 70's is bad Peter Parker acted like 'The Fonz' around
women.) Was the black ooze troilite, a mutated Lawrencite Disease with
spidery diffusion, or just a fused marshmallow?
Best wishes and Great Health,

Good morning list.I just want to thank the 16 people
who chimed in the last 2 weeks on my gao givies. These
were pieces after looking at them very closely,I
decided that they did not fit what I am doing with my
meteorite gao collection.ONLY 95% FUSION CRUSTED OR
BETTER.I am trying to make my collection MUSEUM
like.So I gave those away because I can,I wanted to
make some people happy, and it is not always about
GETTING.I hope the people that received these and all
my other givies in the past are appreciative.Soem
people just cannot afford the big pieces like I can,so
I do what I can for those who cannot. And for those
people who think what I do is stupid or wrong, you
should try it.It is a nice feeling.Have a great
day.More gao is coming.
