As the descendent of more Irish than you could count on your fingers even if you had binary digits, from folks who left County Monaghan in 1627 to great-grandparents who left A Habegh Lichagh in County Kerry in the 1880's and a pair of uncles who had to flee a death sentence after The Easter Uprising, I have the distinct pleasure of informing you that the Erse (Irish, or Gaelic) name that is Anglicized as Patrick is PADRIC. That third letter isn't a T-sound exactly but it isn't a D-sound exactly either, and typing this all in the Roman alphabet is a mistake, too, because Gaelic has its OWN alphabet, so we just have to limp along with Anglicizations that are only partially transliterative of the original. I would use Gaelic in this email except it would then be a violation of List Rules and you would need to have the Extended Latin 8 character set installed on your PC (ISO/IEC 8859-14) and a font that implemented it. Dave, give it rest. Have another beer. I do not doubt that one could find a Wild Gael who is willing to quarrel about a name, but one can find a Wild Gael who is willing to quarrel about almost anything. No, make that anything. Period. In a word, nobody cares. Besides, Saint PADRIC was a Welshman, anyway... Sterling K. Webb, Who has a great long Gaelic name all his owen, which he nivier uses except as his password for things like banks, credit cards, and PayPal, because that way he knows that he'll nivir be robbed ner swindled by any but a Good Irish Thief! Or, possibly someone from the West of the Kingdom of the Scots, or an Eccentric Welshman or maybe even a Sociopathic Polyglot... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Carothers" <david.carothers at verizon.net> To: "steve arnold" <stevenarnold60120 at yahoo.com>; <meteorite-list at meteoritecentral.com> Sent: Sunday, March 18, 2007 1:43 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites forsale (AD) Steve, As always, you need to be a lot more careful in how you word your emails. The term "paddy" is a dispariging term (an offensive term) for a person of Irish descent.
