A large chunk of the biggest fragment, a dark grey rock about five inches in diameter and weighing 2.31 pounds, was sent to the atomic installation at Richland, Wash., for analysis. "This is the first time ever that analytical work has been done so quickly," said Graham Hunt, professor of geology at the University of Louisville. "They tell us that this will be the earliest research ever, which will help us understand better the change from one element to another, which we call radioactivity." (AP) - When a meteorite exploded over Louisville two weeks ago, scientists thought they might find scores of fragments. They asked the public to help. Now they're having second thoughts. "I've got pieces of pavement, coal, rocks, fossilized coral, pieces of black-top roads, limestone, thing like that." says astronomy Prof. Tom Boone, of the University of Louisville. "One lady about 65 brought in a great big lump of coal, eight inches by four inches. One person brought in fool's good. How they found that I don't know. Some of them have wanted money and others haven't. Some of the calls were caused by greed, and other people were just interested." Boone said.
