At least someone here in Flagstaff sitting on the City Council was thinking right. And that was before the silica mine was further excavated to its present size. And the National Monument status was not pursued beyond that initial Flagstaff City Council move in 1949. Marred... Not only by the aforementioned silica mine, but a brand new "secondary crater" watering hole for cattle that can be seen just outside of the southern rim. YES! Damaged the crater is. Preservation... Ha! And furthermore, there was no huge visitor center sitting on the rim in 1949, such as there is now. Mines? Yes... real mines, and... Tourist pockets...
