Would Put Meteor Crater Under Federal Wing
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz - World-famed Meteor Crater may be designated a national =
monument if members of the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce have their way.
The chamber suggests that the scientific and scenic attraction 40 miles e=
ast of here on Highway 66 be placed under federal supervision.
The chamber points out that plans are being made to mine silica on the ri=
m of the privately-owned crater, believed to be the largest in the world.=
This would mar forever the crater's beauty and scientific value to the s=
tate, chamber members complain.
They also object to plans of the University of New Mexico, which has gain=
ed exclusive rights to make scientific surveys in the area.
