What do you think it is that is driving the sicientists to move upon the
government to regulate the meteorite trade?
THE PRICE OF METEORITES !!!
The "worth" question all over again. And it was the "looting" and
market trade of antiquities at the turn of the century that caused (at
the prompting of scientists) to pass the Antiquites Act of 1906.
In it "objects of scientific value" found on public lands were deemed
the property of the Federal Government. And the act was the result of
pot hunters selling pre-columbian arifacts looted from Federal lands to
collectors for exhorbitant prices.
And-- In 1975, in the Old Woman Meteorite case, the Federal Government
expanded its definition as to what "objects of scientific value" were
to include-- meteorites-- even though the original legislation defined
that as pertaining to archeological artifacts.
Believe me-- The government can fry whatever fish they care to fry--
Big, or small....
