Hi Marcin,

I used FB for about 11 years and just got tired of it and the
atmosphere. I had a good run there for about the first five years.
Then a long period of love-hate relationship with it. Then it just
soured and I saw no reason to keep it going. The long slow stagnation
of this list has been painful to watch. There used to be so much
active discussion on a variety of planetary science topics. So many
eloquent contributors have drifted away or gone silent over the years.
Where is Sterling Webb? Where did Ron Baalke's clockwork posts go?
What happened to the buzz of activity that would happen after a new
fall? Much of it went to FB. And why? For photos? People are free to
link to a Flickr, Google, or other cloud service to share their
photos. Uploading photos to the cloud or a website takes the same
amount of time and effort as uploading to FB. The only different on a
text-only list is the necessity of clicking a link and opening a new
browser tab/window.

My point is, FB is a creeping insidious giant gobbling up more and
more internet real estate and bandwidth. And it's motives (from the
top) are not benign. We need more independent venues like this one as
alternatives to the monolithic corporate playground offered to us for

I am sorry you think this is paranoid bullshit. There are a lot of
facts out there on the web about Zuckerberg, his politics, and his
motives. Google Cambridge Analytica or just Zuckerberg in general and
read some articles about his business practices and character. It's
something I choose not to be a part of. And I am not doing it out of
some sense of activism, thinking I will somehow change FB by leaving.
Indeed, I am leaving to keep it from changing me. I am better off
without it and I am thankful we have the Met-List and other forums to
talk about meteorites in.

Best regards,
