I think it is because eBay cannot control the scale cube market and
charge a fee for it. ;)

BTW - last time I checked, you could still include a link to your
personal website on your "About Me" page. It's not as good as a
direct link in your auction description, but it's the next best thing
I guess..... until they take that away also (or charge another fee for
it).
