They used a 1/2" diamond-tipped bit with water coolant and drilled in about 3" to get to the center of the stone. We clamped the stone onto a drill press and made a makeshift 'girdle' to collect the cutting sludge. The same process could be used dry but depending on the type and density of the meteorite, you may have limited success. The purpose would be to preserve certain exterior characteristics by taking ~25 grams in a core and keep the 5gm crusted plug. As a side note, considering most cores I found online were marble cutting using water or a coolant, I would also be interested if the process could be done dry, even if the cutting bit is wasted in process.
