They show nice colors and sometimes special structures well used for petrogaphic studies. But there is an other possibility to study the micro structure of minerals, - the use of a reflecting light microscope with polarising and color selecting filters. This images are ever very colorful too and this colors are mostly real. Reflecting microscope studies allow you to detect on a certain slice thousands of regions, - day for day new structures and if you have seen enough you must turn your probe only an a certain angle and the microworld you see is every time a new one.
