After all was said and done, I did not profit from the production as the labor involved in creating these was intense. First a suitable Campo had to be found, then cored, then sliced, then polished, engraved and then finally etched. Later versions of completely different meteorites were integrated into medallions and also serialized by other dealers. Although they were not made out of meteorites, they were of high quality and produced using a die making them more consistent in size and weight. Some very high quality legal tender coins were also produced during this same time period. The first medallions I have heard about were the "Space Coins" produced by Robert Haag out of scrap meteorite material which was melted down. These have increased in value substantially over the years and you would be lucky to find a collector willing to part with one. I have never owned one of these but would like to. I see it answering all the problems a lay collector would have regarding authenticity, rarity, ease of presentation, preservation and storage...not to mention marketability and a dependable value. Besides their fun to look at. How far did this issuing of collectible meteorite medallions go? Is there a selection, or did you just do one edition? I would think that those who like to collect, not only meteorite examples, but commemorative coins in themselves, would make up a large market. In anticipation of howls from some Listees about the destruction of meteorites and the absence of holding samples only for the science...save it. These were all hand machined and engraved, not die-stamped in Chaco, Argentina accounting for the slight variations. > >I commissioned Hans to have 300 serialized versions made but production stopped at 230 due to cost overruns. These were the very first meteorite medallions to be serialized. I felt they would be more collectible with serial numbers and would be less likely to be copied or counterfeited when they become more valuable with time. Since then, several different types of medallions carrying serial numbers have been produced commemorating several different meteorites . I feel this adds another dimension to meteorite collecting as a whole. > > >Hans can give you a more accurate history than I. > > >Best Regards, > >Adam > > >----- Original Message ---- >From: Bob WALKER <qwalkra at mailbox.ezadsl.net.au> >To: meteorite-list at meteoritecentral.com >Sent: Fri, June 25, 2010 4:15:25 AM >Subject: [meteorite-list] camppo del cielo meteorite medallions > >Listoids > >There are of course a number of these floating around the market ie the >campo del cielo meteorite medallions (the ones with the etched-type >obverse/reverse) and not the inset medallion variety > >Of the etched-type obverse/reverse variety there were a couple of serial >numbered issues and there was a webpage describing the differences between >same - but just when I'd like to view it I cannot find it ! > >Can one of the astute listoids point me in the right direction to this >webpage please > >And some of these are different yet again - ie thicker or thinner or with >a milled edge or without ? some have no serial # on the reverse whilst >some do ! > >Can any listoids tell me more about the whos and hows of the history of >these medallions - how many other odd varieties are out there and what if >any spares of the odd varieties do youse have for sale to me please > >Please contact me off-list although some of the answers to the above may >interest other listoids > >Best > > >______________________________________________ >Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html >Meteorite-list mailing list >Meteorite-list at meteoritecentral.com >http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list > >______________________________________________ >Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html >Meteorite-list mailing list >Meteorite-list at meteoritecentral.com >http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list Received on Fri 25 Jun 2010 01:04:13 PM PDT |
