Count, the proposal is not so outlandish. No one thought that organisms could exist without sunlight for photosynthesis before Vinogradskii proposed chemosynthesis in 1890. That was proven in the 1970s by Alvin the submersible when scientists using it first discovered hydrothermal vents and the strange creatures that thrive there.
