The dust comes from the Sahara. http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=18545&oldid=14334 I suspect that this is a much greater amount to leave a coating as described. I'd guess it is much more rare to have any dust croossing the Atlantic as far north as Mike's location.
