It also means the meteorite has been classified and that a type specimen exists. It also means the classification that was done seems reasonable and authoritative to the committee. However, there is no certification or sanctioning of the classification. In other words, the Meteoritical Society does not in any way certify that Irving's classification is the correct or best one. Approval only implies that he was qualified to classify it and that the classification looked reasonable.
