Police switchboards in Toronto, York and Durham Regions reported receiving several calls from people who had observed a fireball in the night sky between 8 and 8:30 p.m. The mysterious object was likely a meteoroid - or shooting star - which leaves a trail of light, called a meteor, as it burns and breaks up while falling from space through the Earth's atmosphere, police said. There is no word yet on whether anyone has found a meteorite-what is left of the object if and when it hits the Earth's surface. Received on Mon 12 Mar 2007 11:59:23 AM PDT |
