The Sunwa River Lodge is located in the most scenic part of the Vredefort Dome, the central uplift feature of the world's largest and oldest known impact structure - the Vredefort-Witwatersrand Structure <http://www.hartrao.ac.za/other/vredefort/vredefort.html> - and one of the world's newest World Heritage Sites. The lodge is set in the dense woods adjacent to the Vaal River, 100 km southwest of Johannesburg. Because of the location, excursions to Vredefort will not require lengthy travel time. The organizers have negotiated a package deal with the lodge owners that will include accommodations, transfer by luxury coach from Johannesburg, all meals, and all social events. Details will be included in the second announcement, along with the call for abstracts. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ PURPOSE AND SCOPE ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Impact cratering is a fundamental process - if not the most fundamental one - in the solar system and beyond. The process, its planetary effects, and environmental implications have been the subject of three Large Meteorite Impacts and Planetary Evolution (LMI) conferences in 1992 and 1997 (both in Sudbury) and in 2003 in N?rdlingen. Much progress has been made with field, experimental, and numerical simulation studies regarding the understanding of the impact process. Impact cratering has also entered the mainstream of geoscience research. Exciting international drilling and field projects are currently being undertaken, at the same time as new space programs to our neighboring planets and asteroids and comets are delivering important new insights. The conference presents an opportunity for up to 150 participants to debate all aspects of impact cratering and its consequences on Earth and throughout the solar system. A special symposium will be convened concerning the characteristics of the three large impact structures on Earth: Chicxulub, Sudbury, and Vredefort. Special sessions are also expected to cover the recent ICDP drilling projects: Chicxulub, Bosumtwi, and Chesapeake Bay. Besides an exciting scientific program, there will be excursion offers and a social program. Further meeting information will be posted in the second announcement. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FUTURE ANNOUNCEMENTS ------------------------------------------------------------------------ More information will be available in future announcements posted on this website (see schedule below). To aid in planning purposes, we strongly urge you to submit an electronic indication of intent form <http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lmi2008/lmi2008.iofi.cfm> by December 1, 2007. The information on this form will not only provide invaluable information for the meeting organizers as they plan logistical strategies for the conference, but will also subscribe you to an e-mail notification list to receive late-breaking news and information about the conference. Please make sure to include a valid e-mail address. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONTACT INFORMATION ------------------------------------------------------------------------ For further information regarding the format and scientific objectives of the conference, please contact: UWE REIMOLD, Museum f?r Naturkunde, Humboldt University, Berlin E-mail: Uwe.reimold at museum.hu-berlin.de Questions concerning local arrangements should be addressed to: ROGER GIBSON, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg E-mail: roger.gibson at wits.ac.za Other questions concerning the conference should be addressed to the LPI meeting coordinator: MARY CLOUD, Lunar and Planetary Institute Phone: 281-486-2143 E-mail: cloud at lpi.usra.edu SCHEDULE December 1, 2007 Deadline for indication of intent form March 5, 2008 Second announcement with call for abstracts posted on this website May 15, 2008 Deadline for abstract submission June 15, 2008 Final announcement with program and abstracts posted on this website August 18-22, 2008 Conference on Large Meteorite Impacts and Planetary Evolution IV Received on Wed 01 Aug 2007 12:05:49 PM PDT |
