In a ceremony attended by representatives from Dugway Proving Ground (DPG), Hill Air Force Base, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), Johnson Space Center (JSC), and Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), a permanent monument was installed commemorating the significance of solar wind samples returned to Earth. Within the obelisk-shaped monument, a time capsule containing print and media features that characterize the mission from inception to present day was installed. The monument and time capsule were made possible through private donations. The monument is placed on the exact spot of the capsule's Earth return. Plaque inscription for time capsule: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration launched the Genesis Discovery spacecraft on August 8, 2001 to measure the composition of our Sun. Its mission was to travel to the Earth-Sun Libration point L1, collect samples of the Solar Wind, and bring them to Earth. This marks the exact location of the Genesis Sample Return Capsule arrival at 9:58 am on September 8, 2004. Received on Wed 20 Sep 2006 08:43:51 PM PDT |
