Excellent question!

Also, shortly after it was collected, the samples in the water
were identified as fungus spores by Centre for Earth Science Studies in
Trivandrum. It also found in other colors besides red,
including green, black and yellow, and was referred to at the
time as Rainbow Rain. Somehow that later changed to Red Rain.
Also, finding no DNA five years after the fact indicates to me
the cells have deteriorated while in storage since 2001.
