You don't seem to realize that such a new institution needs to attain a certain amount of endowment money if it is *ever* to succeed, and there were initially very few donations - so the Fukang displays were conceived to make people more enthusiastic about donating. For donations of certain amounts, a certain size/shape of "trophy" would be given to the person donating. Though, trophy's hardly the word for such things. I'd call it more of a token of gratitude, if anything. But a good portion of you fail to see the whole rationale of the program. It's not meant to keep any material from collectors, and is, in fact, aiming to make classification a much faster process, so that instead of waiting for months to see the results of a find, dealers will have a turnaround measured in weeks, if not days. Also, the supposition that the program will be soaking up all new material is entirely false. Although it may purchase a portion of new meteorites that are scientifically interesting, the extra amount given to/bought by them (after the initial 20g requirement is fulfilled) would not simply be up to the University. The dealers would still have control regarding the amount to be given or sold to the institution, as they would still own the meteorite being classified. If they chose not to sell or donate to the institution, they could do so, and still have their material classified within the week. They would just know that, instead of sitting on material for months, waiting to get rid of it, tat they could get rid of a portion immediately, and for a fair price. I fail to see how anyone loses. Dealers move material more quickly, collectors get it sooner, and science gets a portion that they'll be able to work with and run more tests on...possibly increasing the value of the meteorite as well. A little less hits the market, but it just means that dealers won't have to sit on old merchandise for longer. As for how I know this.... I've spoken with Marvin a number of times about the project, and am planning on donating a few weeks of my summer to it - if you have money, give it ;) Regards, Jason On 7/12/06, Greg Hupe <gmhupe_at_tampabay.rr.com> wrote: > > Hello Michael, > > If there was not an immediate and clear business plan to classify and/or > examine suspect meteorites, as we were led to believe in Tucson, why did > they start selling "Trophies" to help their 'business' efforts in order to > do so in a timely manner?
