Gary Curtiss and myself spent all day today near the town of Berthoud, Colorado. We passed out dozens and dozens of "Meteorites Wanted" posters and spoke to a lot of the residents of the town. Everyone was very entusiastic and and enjoyed handling the meteorites we brought with us. Our first stop was very close to the area where the meteorite was found. We were told the Whiteis' wanted to keep their privacy, so we respected that. Only a few of the surrounding neighbors were home. None of the people we talked to heard or saw the meteor. Furthermore, it was not picked up by NORAD, so chances are it was a very small event. We visited the local newspapers and did a couple interviews and placed ads in the papers. I have always found this to be a good starting point. We ate lunch and grabbed coffee in the local cafes; once again people were curious and would stop by to see the meteorites and ask questions. The town was abuzz with the word "meteorite". Very cool. After lunch we hung posters in every place the public would frequent...libraries, town hall, schools, restaurants, grocery stores, you name it. The last stop was at the local High School. We spoke with the science teachers at great length and they told us many of the kids were inquisitive about meteorites and they invited us to give a talk next week to their classes. It felt like a meteorite Mecca, at least for a little while. To expand a little on Mike Jensen's comments...the area will be a little difficult to search, since it is mostly plowed corn fields. Plus it rained a lot last night and is now fairly muddy. Chances are bigger pieces are buried. There is a lot of ground to cover, all of which is private. The people are great and willing to talk, but if you come to Berthoud, respect their rights. Remember, we all represent the meteorite community. Til next time... <><><><><> Matt Morgan Mile High Meteorites http://www.mhmeteorites.com P.O.
