[meteorite-list] My Eyes Are Glazing Over- Need "Scorecard"

Can aggree, perhaps some 40 % of my collection is NWA:s, bought from
dealers I know, I can catch after an year or perhaps after ten years...;-

I?m also a collector of artifacts, and some arrow-heads may have 5 - 10
labels to find out the origin of the item. If the chain of the owners is
broken, it means problems, when selling the artifact.

I was a bit provocative in my former mail, but all this is not good for the
hobby or for the business.

Many of my NWA:s are bought from Hupe?s and other well-known dealers.
When I put the specimen ahead, the original label will follow, and I
enclose
my own, so if the buyer find the specimen as something else he / she thought
to buy after 10 years, we can find the beef.

It?s not realistic to think, the buyer is in response, what he / she is
buying, so
the only way at the moment is to trust in the seller. Everybody makes
mistakes,
but an honest seller corrects them, and that?s all. When I know the first
owner of the specimen and he / she is a serious delaer / collector, no
problem.

But we have to remember, this is a very sensitive hobby / business, and
it?s not
looking very wise to me to arque in public, who owns a number / possible
pairings etc... before you are absolute sure, what is the truth, or the
best quess,
all can aggree (many scientifical "truths" are just the best quesses).

As I said, it?s not realistic to belive, the buyer will check every
specimen he / she
buys. Anyway, many of us makes trades with universities and others, who have
the possibility to have a closer look at the specimen. I sure know, if
I?d trade an
ordinary chondrite as a lunar to the universtiy of Helsinki, I?ll have a
call in a day
or two.

The authenticy of the specimen is the first thing, serious (or not so
serious) colector
is interrested in (the size and quality are secundary, and are up to
that, how much
you are going to spend for the specimen).

best,

pekka s
