Matt Morgan protested Mark Ford's comment:

"Personally, I say never mind the dealers, the Buyers should get stuff checked! - I certainly will from now on, all Lunar Martian stuff etc I buy will gonna be checked over a lot more stringently than usual..."

Hola Matt, 100% behind you. Let me add another tenth of a cent to that IMHO, It seems that some people think the danged scientists have an obligation to drop their livelihood and help them for free, whereas purchasing rocks from a watering hole in a sandbox whenver the crazy idea pops in their head requires compensation no questions asked. There is enough for everyone to go 'round, I think, if greed weren't so overwhelming here. The scientific value is part of the value chain when you purchase a meteorite and ought to be treated as such! If you can get a free lunch, or just have speculation swamping out the scientist in you -i.e., not paying for science nor the scientific establishment because you found a legal oportunistic loophole, good for you!! Please don't stick it in our faces or publically, some of us want scientists to continue to be employed (getting money or new material in their coffers to continue studing meteorites and publishing new and exciting stuff for our consumption, too) and provide
some semblance of unbiasedness! Who wouldn't grab an opportunity if the scientists left a rock behind. But this Nanny-nanny pooh pooh in the face of the folks supporting the science has got to stop, don't you think???
Saludos, Doug

Yes but even reputable dealers buy rocks from other people/collectors,
the 'reliable' dealers buy collections and sell pieces, presumably
without 'submitting it', naturally they would just go with what the
labels that came with them say...

It's simply not practical to test everything.

If you don't know the dealer personally, and exactly where (S)he got the
stuff, then you owe it to yourself to have it checked, that's my
philosophy! (That way dodgy material would soon be picked up).

Example : I had to laugh, on the back page of the current issue of
Meteorite, is an advert for a complete SAU 130 Martian individual,
completely uncut 100% crusted, they even advertised the fact that it
hadn't been sampled! - So the old question applies - How can it be
100% Sau 130?

Best

Mark:
Any reputable dealer SHOULD have their NWA's tested by a lab; and I
believe
most do this.
It should not be up to the collector to have their items verified. That
is
unjust and unfair to them.

As someone, who is trying to follow this discussion,
my eyes are starting glaze over with NWA 1110 this;
NWA 2223 that; NWA 3133 is mine; NWA 3133 is not
yours; my NWA 1906 is real; your NWA 1906 is fake;
may the real NWA 788, NWA 787, or NWA 482,
please stand up. It is hard to search back through
the innumerable posts, given the lack of a search
engine specifically for the archives, to find out the
details behind each specific number is being talked
about.

At some point, it seems someone needs to provide
a "scorecard" of some sort, if it doesn't already
exist, about what each of these "players" (meteorites)

in the number game are about. It would help the soft
core, uninitiated lurkers better understand what is
the significance of NWA XXXX versus either
NWA YYYY or NWA YYXX.

As the posts go back and forth about these numbers,
I think of a song to the tune of "This Land is Your
Land" that starts out as "NWA 1110 is My number,
NWA 1110 is not your number from Uranus to Mercury..."
appearing at some point.

Yours,

Paul
