We are better equipped today to distinguish volcanic craters from meteoritic ones- I expect that the geology of this caldera is fairly well understood. It certainly couldn't be older than a few million years given the degree of uplift in the area. A personal observation (and quite non-expert) is that this structure's eccentricity argues against an impact origin.
