I am giving it the date January 18, 1952 for= archive purposes as logic tells me it is closer to the January 17th orig= inal proposal of the Stuart funds letter, then the February 3 letter from= Nininger to Perry that notes he is on the way to Xiquipilco.] PROPOSED USE OF S.H. PERRY RESEARCH FUND Since plans have been drawn up and approved for work around the Arizona m= eteorite crater. It is considered advisable to expend the Perry fund on p= rojects entirely separate and remote from that area. Many field projects = have been in our files for years awaiting the hoped for time when money m= ight be available for their investigation. We have selected a number of t= hese as the most desirable upon which to work in so far as Mr. Perry's pr= esent contribution will permit. 1) The Xiquipilco project is considered to be the most immediate importan= ce - because of the present up-surge of interest in meteorite craters. I = first suspected the presence of a crater or craters there in 1929. Three = subsequent attempts to secure proof have each been encouraging but never = conclusive. Now, with our knowledge of the metallic spheroids as a produc= t of a large meteorite impacts we propose a new and more serious approach= to the problem, (a) To fly over the area (about 46 miles air line from M= exico City) and attempt to determine whether its rugged canyons and ravin= es show evidence of having been modified by the former existence of crate= rs. (b) We shall visit again the area by land and make a magnetic search = for metallic spheroids such as are now being collected at the Arizona Cra= ter. (c) We shall also subject soil samples to panning and microscopic ex= amination of concentrates with a view of the possibility of the spheroids= having been altered to non-magnetic oxides. (d) In company with Dr. F. G= Mullerreid of the Geological Department of National University of Mexic= o we shall inspect the formations for stratigraphical deformations indica= tive of meteoritic impact. All of our work will be done with full knowledge consent of the Institute= of Geology and the National University, Mexico and any material will be = taken only with their consent and representative samples of any significa= nt finds will be left with three institutions. Dr. Mullerreid has collabo= rated with us continuously since our first visit to the Republica of Mexi= co in 1929 and has agreed to do so on the proposed expedition. To safeguard our health we are taking a small house trailer and Mrs. Nini= nger will serve as cook as well as secretary, bookkeeper, ect. This expedition should require four weeks more or less depending upon fie= ld developments. Assuming four weeks as the time our estimate of cost is = as follows: 1) Meteorite Museum to Mexico City and return, 3772 mi. _at_ 10.5 cents - - = - - - - 398.05 2) Mexico City to Xiquipilco and return, 320 mi.
