Hello, Pierre and the list,

Oxalic acid is a simple member of the caboxylic acids -family, you can
find it from the rhubarb. Itīs strong enough to remove rust from porcelain
etc. I have tried it in some Nantans and Campos with not so good results,
itīs too weak to remove any deeper rust from FeNi.

Some mineral-collectors boil their rusty specimens in the liquid Oxalic
acid,
havenīt tried that. If you want to try, you should take care of the
ventilation
good enough. Even if the acid is weak, the vapours are dangerques to breath.

Also, if the acid is used as a liquid including water / powder-acid has been
washed with water, the specimens must be dryed after the bath. Anyway,
Oxalic acid is a good remover of rust for household items, bath-rooms and
so on, so if youīll find it to work with irons, I suppose, there is no
harm for
them to use it, itīs a very week acid, and can be washed out with water, so
you donīt have to neutralize it. Think the main thing is to get the
specimens
dried good enough after the bath, or the result may be worse than the
original...;-

Donīt know the product Dithonite.

take care,

pekka
