Orissa govt asked to preserve meteor-hit craters

Kendrapara - The Indian Meteor Society (IMS), a Pune-based research organisation,
has suggested to the Orissa government to undertake proper preservation of the
craters formed at two places in Kendrapara district after the meteorite dazzled
the night sky on September 27.

The suggestion to preserve the site of the craters was put forth after a
two-member team of researchers of IMS recently made an on-the-spot study of
the craters at Paschima Suniti and Purba Suniti villages under Mahakalapada
block, where the splinters of the meteorite were found in uninhabited places.

Mayuresh Prabhunel, a researcher of IMS, told PTI here that craters of more
than five-feet length had been formed and these were still lying unprotected.
These craters need to be protected and preserved as they were of immense
scientific value for those involved in space research.

The energy generated by the impact of the planetary objects on the earth's
crust should be taken up for scientific study as it had been done earlier
in the USA. The meteorite strike in unmanned territory of the USA had
formed craters in the 1960s and these were preserved till today.
