Hi Dave and List,

>The key here is KNOWLEDGEABLE BUYER AND >SELLER

Yes, that's it exactly. As I point out on my website, knowledge is the key.
An enthusiastic newcomer to the field (any field, for that matter) may
realize after the sale that, other things being equal, he or she could have
obtained the same specimen for a lower price elsewhere and may have some
buyers remorse but, hey, that's just part of the learning process and is
part of the free market economy. Having said that, I might deliberately
overpay for a certain meteorite because of some special characteristic
(e.g., my birthday or family members name or it completes a niche in my
collection) but I do so with the knowledge of what I am doing.

Dave, was it you who pointed out that buyers actually dictate the prices of
meteorites (I did the same in a post many years ago)? Sorry if I am
slightly anyone here but in a very real sense, this is true. The thing
about buyers is, they tend to act individually whereas sellers (maybe I
should go ahead and use the term "dealers") sometimes act as a group. For a
good example of this, read Michael Bloods latest piece at Meteorite Times.
I am not sure I agree with everything Michael states but it makes for some
interesting reading when you read between the lines and think a little about
what Michael wrote!

(who enjoys looking for bargains in meteorites and
who needs to update his meteorite hit list and
who needs some information on cleaning trilobite fossils
from the surrounding matrix )
