That´s why I´m now planning to get some pictures of different type holes on a web-site, natural melting holes, holes made by animals, holes made by fishers etc.. But it seems tobe a bit difficult to have a real meteorite-hole pic...;- Anyway, we have tried to check all at least slightly possible ones. It wouldn´t be very nice to loss the real-one. > > >Also looking at the list above, both the US and Russia is missing, >quitet strange, I think, especially Russia. Maybe Russia is just >*very* flat, and Siberia to cold to venture outside in winter :-)? > Well, it´s some times quite hard to get good information about russian falls, big country, cold winters and not very widely populated areas in Siberia, perhaps these are some reasons... Anyway, it would make sence to me, these cases would have happened also in the northern parts of the US and also in Canada. But if we think about Takish Lake, it was quite near, all material was lost. And this fall was cathed on the film, but was firstly found by the bush-pilot... > > >I don't assert that the list is complete, some case(s) might have >slipped through my fingers, maybe. By the way, it seems, Luotolax has wrong coordinates in quite many lists / books, more will be found from Jarmo Moilanen´s site; http://www.netppl.fi/~jarmom/geo/met/mluoto_e.htm > > >Why are you so certain that the last hole in northern Finland was not >a meteorite, you know that the top layers of bedrock are bent backwards >in large meteorite craters, e.g. Meteor Crater. > Well, there were in fact 2 layers of ice on the area, and in the hole only the week upper layer was broken, the steel-ice layer on the bottom was intact. Also it could be seen, the pressure had come under the ice, and when there was no fragments between the layers or on the upper ice, it looked sure to me, this hole was made by flowing water between the layers. This was lately been proven by photographes taken from the plane over the area; in these pics it can be clearly seen, how the water flows between the layers from the fell "Halti" nearby. Anyway, I strongly belive, there should be more of these "fall on the ice"-cases in northern areas with a lot of lakes or nearby frozen sea. One reason these will be never found sure is the slightly populated areas in the north. The big one on Greenland is still missing...;- thank you and best regards, pekka > > > > > > -- Pekka Savolainen Jokiharjuntie 4 FIN-71330 Rasala FINLAND + 358 400 818 912 Group Home Page: http://www.smartgroups.com/groups/eurocoin Group Email Address: eurocoin_at_smartgroups.comReceived on Mon 12 May 2003 03:36:40 PM PDT |
