Hello Rand,

No problem. The fact that they were trying to mine the meteorite is a s=
tory itself. You might be interested in reading Coon Mountain Controvers=
ies: Meteor Crater and the Development of Impact Theory by William Graves=
 Hoyt
(Univ. of Arizona Tucson, AZ: 1987 HB ISBN 0816509689 8vo, xii, 442pp) f=
or more information. I talk about the crater in my last "Collectors Corn=
er" column at MeteoriteTimes.com as well.

If it was mined today I do not think it would drop the price of meteorite=
s any....well other then a short term effect on Canyon Diablo's. Barring=
er's interest was in melting the meteorite for its minerals. This was be=
fore the big nickel discovery in Sudbury, Canada and at a time nickel was=
worth more (minus inflation of course). Therefore very little of it wou=
ld have gotten into sale pages or catalogs. The mass of one meteorite do=
es not seem to have much affect on other meteorites values, and if there =
was a surplus on the market, who wouldn't want a Canyon Diablo ected door=
?

(Thinking its about time for another Kansas meteorite fall).

eor. It was pointed out to me that the information Mark posted was from =
an old article and mining of a huge Barringer meteor never took place. S=
orry my wonderful list members! My bad!!! Rand
