Several members of the dealer community have described meteorites from their own analyses. These dealers understand that the NomCom may ask for a second opinion on descriptions of meteorites other than simple equilibrated ordinary chondrites, and that the NomCom will ask them to get professional verification of their data when they first start analyzing minerals (to help establish a track record). If a description does not meet our normal standards for a particular type of meteorite, we would not accept it. We also never waive the 20g/20% rule for types specimens to be placed in institutional collections, as this has nothing whatsoever to do with the requirement that a meteorite is properly classified.

Also, don't forget that there is more to describing a meteorite than mineral analyses. For all interesting meteorites, somebody also has to do a sound petrologic description, and in many cases supplemental data must be obtained to complete a classification (e.g., O isotopes, trace element analyses).

jeff
At 08:35 AM 7/6/2003 -0700, you wrote:

Hello Randy,
I can see how such a service may be well worth the cost IF it
would allow hunters and other dealers to leap frog long institutional
waits. Pyroxenes would be analyzed for all of the major elements, such as Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Al, Na, and 3 others (Na, Mn, K for example). Actually, I can analyze any mineral phase (in meteorites or in terrestrial samples), but the abovementioned are the ones that seem to peak most poeple's interest when it comes to meteorites.

This will be the standard cost breakdown for electron microprobe work:

any 2 analyses (i.e. Fe/Ni ratios or pyroxenes) for $100
any 4 analyses for $150
any 6 analyses for $200

For the purpose of insuring a representative sample, I would recommend 2-3 analyses of each mineral phase of interest. I do sample prep on Saturdays (if necessary), and analyses would normally be done sometime during the following week. Polished thin sections can also be used in lieu of unprepared samples. I would e-mail preliminary results to you ASAP, with a full report to follow in the mail

SEM imaging and XRD identification of individual mineral phases will be priced out on a case-by -case basis.
