Try this,
Get a piece of clear window glass, about 1' square,
and four coke cans.

Set the glass on the cans using them as legs, now
place a nice background mat in the space beneath.
Your meteorite can then be set on the glass and your
camera focused on it. Being that it is "suspended" by
the glass several inches above the mat, there will be
very little shadow in the picture, also lighting can
be better controlled with white paper or foil set at
angles out of the field of the camera but close enough
to the specimen to bring out the details that you what
to show.
