There will be a Minuteman III launch this evening out of Vandenberg. The launch window opens at 6:01pm PDT, and they usually launch on time (unfortunately, since it will still be daylight here in SoCal). If the launch is delayed an hour, it will be much more spectacular for us in southern California due to backlighting of the exhaust plume. But even if they launch on time, there should be some residual exhaust at high altitude, making for a nice sunset. For those in Arizona and Nevada, the lighting should be better since the sun will be lower at launch time. If you see colorful squiggly contrails in the west at sunset, you'll know the launch has occurred. --Rob Received on Thu 19 Sep 2002 08:23:50 PM PDT |
