Dear Sarah:

I was terribly saddened by this morning's news about your husband --
and my friend -- Dave Coleman.

As Sarah knows, her husband and I worked on a series of web and
photography projects together. Dave had a great scientific knowledge,
and his friendly and jovial nature made him fun to be with, and to
work with. We shared many a laugh by telephone and email.

Dave was a regular at meteorite-related social functions in Tucson,
and elsewhere, and was well-liked and respected by the many members
of the Meteorite List who were lucky enough to have know him. Dave
was extremely knowledgeable about impact structures and didn't allow
the fact that he needed crutches to get around, prevent him from
doing field work: exploring craters, hunting for shattercones and so
on, and I admired him immensely for that.

Last year, I sent Dave and Sarah some of my meteorite photographs for
one of their Jensan Scientific projects. Dave was very taken with one
Sikhote-Alin in my collection, and said it was "the most oriented
iron" he'd ever seen. That particular piece has always been a great
favorite of mine, so I was pleased that somebody else appreciated it.
Jokingly, Dave said to me, "Geoff, you should leave that Sikhote to
me in your will." It was intended as a humorous comment, but Dave was
so taken with the piece that I decided I actually would leave it to
him. Unfortunately, I will now not have that opportunity.

Condolences to Sarah, Dave's family, and his many friends.

Sincerely,

Geoff Notkin
