The problem is as you stated, but to educate the public-- that is not an easy task when it comes to meteorites. I have had an "identification site" up for several years now. http://www.geocities.com/meteorite_identification Or search the term "Meteorite Identification" on any search engine. Many have told me that this is one of the best and clearest meteorite ID sites on the web, but even then, I get nearly one thousand samples a year and thus far only three out of thousands sent over several years were meteorites. It is very difficult to convey what the characteristics of meteorites are to those that have not a clue other than the fact that their rock is heavy, black and magnetic. Then there are the sites out there like "Boggy Creek" and others that muddy the waters even more. And that coupled with meteorwrongs on Ebay make it even harder for us who know a meteorwrong from a meteorite. I think the best course has already been initiated. IMCA As it grows we will have a community of meteorite enthusiasts that will certainly know the difference a rock and a meteorite. And more importantly, offer to those becoming interested in the field meteorites that are EXACTLY what we say they are--- meteorites and not meteorwrongs. And maybe, just maybe, IMCA will have its own "auction site" where all that is offered will be meteorites. Boggy Creeks, Frass, and other so called "lunars" excluded-- for obvious reasons.
