I will be in = touch later on in the week with Dr. A.J. Irving after he returns from a = NASA Mars workshop in the field. One very important feature he was = going to discuss is the Isotopic data thus far recorded for this Unique = Orthopyroxene-bearing Nahklite. The newly published data is so vastly = different from the other five Nahklites that several scientists are = focusing in on this new information that was supposed to be addressed at = last Fridays meeting. This new data implies that NWA 998 is not source = crater paired with the other five Nahklites which all have similar = crystallization ages. The data also has other implications that go far = beyond NWA 998 not being source crater paired. Using current scientific = models for these isotopes, this rock will forever change the way = scientists think about Mars. NWA 998 is a very scientifically important = find and research has just begun so expect to read more, soon. Wishing everybody the best, Adam Hupe ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Matson, Robert=20 To: 'Michael Farmer' ; meteorite-list_at_meteoritecentral.com=20 Sent: Monday, July 29, 2002 3:35 PM Subject: [meteorite-list] Any news? Hi Mike and List, =20 > Does anyone have any news from the meeting last week in California? = I know=20 > NWA 998 was to make some big news.=20 =20 The only abstract referencing NWA 998 (the sixth known Nahklite) was "Petrology and Isotopic Composition of Orthopyroxene-bearing Nakhlite NWA 998" by A. J. Irving, S. M. Kuehner, D. Rumble III, R. W. Carlson, A. C. Hupe and G. M Hupe. I didn't hear of any big news about the 456-gram meteorite, but then I missed most of the presentations due to work conflicts and a particularly poorly-timed kidney stone attack (is there ever a good time?!) =20 I know Adam and Greg subscribe to Meteorite Central -- if anyone would know about news w.r.t. NWA 998, it would surely be them. Perhaps they will chime in? --Rob ------=_NextPart_000_0019_01C2371E.0FDBBA00 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META content=3D"text/html; charset=3Diso-8859-1" = http-equiv=3DContent-Type> <META content=3D"MSHTML 5.00.2919.6307" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>Hello fellow list members,</FONT></DIV> <DIV> </DIV> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>I was unable to attend the 65th = Meteoritical=20 Society meeting so I have not received the latest announcements = concerning NWA=20 998.
