There is also the chance that these "periodic" extinction events are
simply the results of... chance. There is a certain charm to the idea
that something flings a barrage of civilization-killing meteors at the
Earth periodically, but until the smoking gun is discovered (or at least
we get some strong evidence to suggest one) we can't entirely rule out
just bad luck.

Man is a pattern-seeking -- and finding -- animal. It's a survival
characteristic, but can be erroneous.
