The Woodleigh impact structure was created 360 million years ago when a five-kilometre diameter asteroid slammed into the ground. The resultant explosion probably caused life on earth to become extinct, but also changed the make-up of rock in the area. Geologist with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum resources Franco Pirajno, says there may be hidden underground wealth at the site. "One important feature is the fact that these impact sites constitute areas where you may find mineral deposits, where you may find even petroleum deposits, petroleum reservoirs, because the rocks are shattered," he said.
