Dave,
My son has an Intel QX3 PC Microscope. Now it is not lab quality but is does
hook up to a USB port, features its own illumination from the top or
underside, 10x, 60x and 200x settings. Its software allows you to do some
cool things with it, slide shows, movies, the picture quality depends on the
subject, and it is around $50.00 so it is not that expensive, Best Buy is
where I got his. He spent about an hour taking pics of our Allende that
arrived yesterday.

It can definetly be used for exactly the purpose you are wishing for.
