My local paper says that China is looking to launch a Lunar probe sometime
soon. While this doesn't preclude the possibility that they are _also_
considering Mars, I think the Moon is what you're thinking of. It seems
too early for them to plan going to Mars just yet... 1/4 million miles as
opposed to 45 million and all that this implies.
