This phrase from yesterdays conversation brought up a question I've had for some time. The phrase 'most meteorites are magnetic' or something similar to it is widely used. Is there a common guideline for usage that distinguishes items that in themselves generate a magnetic field and those which do not, but are attracted by magnets. ie: magnetic v. magnetically attracted And secondly, are there any meteoritic iron masses that are truly magnetic, and actually naturally generate noticable magnetic fields of their own?
