Acuna et al.'s measurements of the magnetic field of Mars suggests that at
3.9 to 4.0 billion years ago Mars had a very weak magnetic field. The
strength of that magnetic field would be sufficient to produce the features
within the magnetites produced by magnetotactic bacteria.
