The fall (in most cases) is just a few seconds of travel before the point of retardation is reached and the meteor starts its dark flight. Nininger had figured this out after investigating many people who had pick up a meteorite shortly after its fall. We are talking non-impacting type meteors which don't cause craters. The skin of an air craft (SST or the space shuttle) is hot after flight because this is taking place over a period of quite a few minutes. The heat has a chance to build up. Meteorites have documented cases of them being warm when they arrive but the fire stories have to be related to something else. Nice meeting you Roman in Tucson and it certainly is worth a trip one time or those of us that are truly passionate about meteorites, many times. --AL Received on Sat 10 Feb 2001 03:38:05 PM PST |
