Same type of thing happened down here in Louisiana last December -- an
alleged meteorite impact starting a swamp fire south of New Orleans. It
took a while but I was finally able to talk to all the witnesses and find
reports of the fireball from other areas. There was no meteorite. The
fireball's extinction point must have been up around northern Mississippi or
Alabama, and for a variety of reasons swamp fires in that area aren't
terribly unusual. A fireball followed by the discovery of a fire appears to
have been a coincidence.
