Hello Ron and List,
Here's a breakdown of US and Soviet missions to Mars as of 1977 (end of
the year):
Mars 1-USSR-01.11.1962-Partial success; communication failure
Mariner 3-USA-05.11.1964-Failure; protective cover doesn’t come off
Mariner 4-USA-28.11.1964-Flyby - 21 pictures of martian surface
Zond 2-USSR-30.11.1964-communication failure in April 1965
Flew past Mars: 6.8.1965
Mariner 6-USA-24.2.1969-Flew past Mars at a height of 3420 km
above equator - 75 pictures
Mariner 7-USA-27.3.1969-Flew past Mars at a height of 3500 km
over southern hemisphere; 126 pictures
Mariner 8-USA-08.5.1971-Rocket failure
Mars 2-USSR-19.5.1971-Reaches orbit but crashes on martian surface
Mars 3-USSR-28.6.1971-First soft landing; contact lost after 4 minutes
Mariner 9-USA-30.5.1971-by 27.10.1972 - 7329 TV-pictures taken;
complete cartography; mission lasted
515 days (349 days in Mars orbit)
Mars 4-USSR-21.7.1973-Fails to go into Mars orbit because of
brakeage failure; flyby
Mars 5-USSR-25.7.1973-Reaches elliptical orbit
Mars 6-USSR-05.8.1973-Failure during descent
Mars 7-USSR-09.8.1973-Lander misses Mars
