Hi Guys & List: There is not the slightest question in my mind that the subject email is a legitimate warning notice by a zealous, state-level Argentine official who has been watching current eBay auctions offering Campo meteorites and wants to use some extraordinary initiative to make a name for himself. I had immediately discounted the chance of a joke as I believed that the artful language used was beyond the expertise of a state-side, meteorite-wise prankster who saw my Campo bid on eBay. Also, I was already aware of the existence of a U.S. treaty with Mexico, having similar language, covering pre-Columbian items. The preliminary detective work done by the Chief Deputy of the Meteorite Sheriff's Posse, Dave Andrews, confirms that belief. It doesn't compute that someone in Argentina, the source of the email, would bother to play that kind of game. Of course, if I get another message telling me that my problem can be fixed for $100., I might reconsider that point. ;¬) Trust my instincts, folks, the warning notice is real ! Re: Jim's question about the choice of service provider, I say Why Not? The price is right, it's easily accessible, and goes from and to the right places to accomplish the sender's mission. From a practical standpoint, I believe that only the exporters and major U.S. sellers need to be at all concerned, 'tho I personally wouldn't want to win the bidding on that very large quantity of a South American meteorite (Campo?) that is currently being sold on eBay. Based on his past service to the meteorite community, I can guess that Dave will confirm the authenticity of the email in question by enlisting the help of the domain postmaster and/or making direct email contact with the sender. It would seem appropriate at that point for someone to: 1.contact the U.S. State Department or Attorney General to receive confirmation that meteorite purchasers in the U.S. indeed have at least a theoretical risk of losing some of their collection to designated countries having treaties with the U.S. which permit search, seizure and confiscation; and 2. so notify the meteorite community. Any volunteers? Cheers, Joel

My theory is that some Argentinan saw you purchase these, or saw something on the web in reference to you guys buying/possessing them? Just a theory, Dave Jim Strope wrote: > Still unanswered........ What do you think of the Argentine govt using a > yahoo email account?
