Hello Dean:
I have just had a very similar experience with one of those Labenne 'main
masses' for our teaching collection. I bought several kilos. I also came
across one such large metallic inclusion (maybe 6-8 mm across), except that
my unclassified piece turned out to be a black veined L6 (from a visual
inspection) and from the metal glob there was a metal infusion into one of
the veins to the edge of the specimen - about 2 inches long. A beautiful
and rather unusual thing to see. I've seen a lot of veins filled with metal
but never with a big blob at the end - sort of is reminiscent of Portales
Valley in a very minor way, I would say. I'm finding a lot of interesting
things, cutting some of these. One thing which surprised me is that some of
these larger metal flecks will ooze what we used to blame on lawrencite,
that
ferric chloride/hydrochloric acid/rust cycle. I've never seen it like that
in a stone before. Check out all those larger flecks under 10X. I find
that just by wiping a well polished specimen once or twice when the ooze is
seen, the
problem will seem to go away. By the time the reaction is noticed visually,
you will have some damage to your metallic 'blob'.
Best wishes,
Ron Hartman
