I can see the headlines in the Enquirer already:
"Heaven's Gate Clan Vindicated - Satellite Found Orbiting Hale-Bopp"
Good grief! Heaven's help us, please!
>>"Meanwhile, Sekanina plans to get to work figuring out the orbital details
of
his suspected satellite. One result of that effort could be a better
understanding of comets in general. "If we can calculate the orbit, we could
calculate the first mass of a comet ever," he said."<<
This would be great information. It would also help planners in deciding
the best method to divert a potential impactor (assuming there is a method).
A 2-in-1 comet.
Wasn't this the worst case senario in the movie "Deep Impact"?
:-(

Hale-Bopp may have a satellite
By Robert Roy Britt, explorezone.com.

"If a comet had two nuclei, Weaver said there is a chance the two could
collide, "which would temporarily produce a large outburst in activity by
the comet."
Meanwhile, Sekanina plans to get to work figuring out the orbital details of
his suspected satellite. One result of that effort could be a better
understanding of comets in general. "If we can calculate the orbit, we could
calculate the first mass of a comet ever," he said."
