ALH84001 and other SNCs
Which brings us to today. What I want to propose to you is this: If
you are lucky enough to own any SNCs, why not lend them to your local
university's biology department, so that they can examine them for
fossils?
Stuart has written several times about the look of
joy and wonder on children's faces when he has passed around
meteorites for them to hold at his talks. Can you imagine the look on
the face of the head of a biology department when offered the use of a
meteorite from Mars?
Now I'm not proposing that you do this because of the good press it
would generate for private collectors. Nor am I suggesting to you
that you might want to do this to prevent the different governments
from coming in and imposing regulations on collectors, so as to
protect scientifically valuable specimens for researchers.
No, I'm proposing that you do this out of self interest. Notice I
said "lend", not "donate", in my proposal. What do you get in return
for your loan?
At the least, you get returned to you perfectly sliced and mounted and
authenticated specimens.
At best, they find something that was once alive and you and your
descendants end up retired and very comfortable for many years to come.
Thus ends my tale of "ALH84001 and Me". I hope that you have enjoyed
it, and that you have not found it to be "off topic" or too
distracting. I apologize for being so late in getting it to you, but
I hope that you will understang that the press of family business has
kept me pretty well occupied recently.
(PS - If this does not get Ron Baalke back on the list, I hope that my
next note will do the trick.)
