Jim,

Dense meteorites like Gao restore very nicely. I re-polished an end
piece by starting with 400 grit and working progressively down to a 1500
grit wet sand with methanol. I finished the surface with clear lacquer
and it looks spectacular.

Meteorites like Hamada are another story because the sanding dust is
difficult to remove from the pores. I have refinished Mt. Tazerzait
with great success but had a difficult time with Hamada. Vacuming and
rinsing will not neccessarily remove all the sanding dust. Submersion
in a sonicator bath filled with alcohol works great if you can get
access to a sonicator.
